The Perfect Winter Escape

Two Medicine Lake and Sinopah MtnLocated just outside Glacier National Park in Montana, The Great Bear Inn is an inspired setting for a perfect winter escape. Take advantage of our fantastic winter rates for a Montana getaway that you and your family will never forget!

Winter comes early to our area, so by late November most years, guests can cross country ski or snowshoe directly from our back door and explore the forest and trails that surround the Inn. Areas of the Park that are busy in the summer offer solitude and an escape from your hectic day to day life.

Our lodge in the winterImagine an evening snowshoe with your family, and then returning to the Inn to relax in our Great Room around the fireplace while your dinner is being prepared for you. This is what a Montana winter escape is all about!

Our location only 5 minutes from the West Gate of Glacier National Park will allow you to enjoy the splendor of Glacier's winter landscape on the winter trails in the Park.  Explore hundreds of miles of trails in Glacier National Park, the Flathead National Forest, and throughout the valley. For more information on the cross country ski and snowshoe trails easily reached from the Inn, download Cross Country Skiing Montana's Flathead Valley.

For a unique winter experience, how about dog sledding? Our winter wilderness offers a glimpse into an ancient mode of transport, when life was slower and people were one with the natural world around them. For those wanting a little more adrenalin, local guides can take you on a snowmobiling adventure of the area, or will drop the snow machines off at the Inn for you to explore the area on your own. For more information on snowmobiling in the area, download Snowmobiling Montana's Flathead Valley.

If downhill skiing or snowboarding is more your thing, Whitefish Mountain Resort at Big Mountain is less than an hour away.

You won't need to make dinner reservations and drive thirty minutes to the nicer restaurants in the area or wait to be seated. Other amenities included with your stay at The Great Bear Inn: billiards, ping pong, Wii© video game system, custom chess set, DVD and book collection, large viewing deck and lots of hiking in the area. We offer cans of bear spray free of charge to our guests. While hiking in this area and anywhere in Glacier Park, we strongly recommend having it on your person. Although the chances are extremely remote of a bear encounter, it is always better to be safe than sorry. You may sign for a can at the front desk and we will be happy to show you how and when to use it.

Please note that our dogs are a welcome addition to our property as they effectively protect us from predatory wildlife. Most of our guests enjoy them very much and want photographs with their new friends.

We are two miles off the main highway which provides a serene environment during your stay. A short stretch of this county road is well-maintained gravel. Also note that this is train country. Everywhere in the West Glacier area you will hear train whistles nearby.
